What is Black Surf Week?Black Surf Week is a week-long Black Like Water experience open to all UC San Diego undergraduate and graduate students. Participants learn to surf while engaging with Black and African Diasporic histories, stories, and relationships to land and water.
Black Surf Week at a Glance
Through the week, participants come together for experiences centered on learning, reflection, movement and community.
Opening Ceremony and Libations: Begin the week by honoring the ancestors and waters that carry us.
Film Screening: Watch Wade in the Water directed by David Mesfin and reflect on Black aquatic history and culture.
Black Hair and Water Conversations: Explore the relationship between hair, identity, and water.
Pool Day and Swim Assessment: Build comfort and confidence in a supportive environment. No prior swimming experience is required.
Surf Lessons: Receive guided instruction designed for a range of comfort and experience levels.
Water Story Reflections: Reflect on the memories and experiences that have shaped your relationship with water
Community Sunset Photoshoot: Close the week with a professional sunset photoshoot celebrating joy, growth, and connection.
