Our Mission
Black Like Water is an interdisciplinary research collaboratory at UC San Diego dedicated to investigating the historical, cultural, and health dimensions of Black relationships to marine, coastal, and aquatic environments. Through rigorous scholarship, educational design, and public humanities, the collaboratory examines maritime traditions, environmental health, and the transformative ways individuals and communities connect with the natural world.
Our Ethos
Though a scholarly endeavor, we attempt to engage in Black relations with land and water with our mind-heart-body.
We strive to be in good relation to the land, water, and the people around us.
We respect differences across race, gender, sexuality, and religious beliefs.
Our Practice
Our work is collaborative with Sponsors and Partners in the greater San Diego region, and we’re always looking to further community partnerships.
We practice, across all of our work, participatory methods that include listening and speaking with respect for diversity in thoughts, experiences, and knowledges
