What is Black Ski & Snowboard Weekend?

Black Ski & Snowboard Weekend is a two-day Black Like Water experience open to all UC San Diego undergraduate and graduate students. Participants learn to ski or snowboard while exploring Black and African Diasporic relationships to land and water, building community, and creating new connections with the outdoors.

Black Ski & Snowboard Weekend at a Glance

When & Where: BSSW takes place in the Winter Quarter at Big Bear Mountain, approximately 2.5 hours from UC San Diego campus.

Experience Level: Beginners are welcome, and for many participants, it is their first time skiing, snowboarding, or experiencing the snow.

Gear & Cost: Equipment is provided as needed, and accepted applicants may be eligible for a full scholarship to cover program costs.

What to Expect: Alongside time on the mountain, participants engage in conversation and reflection about Black and African Diasporic relationships to land, snow, and outdoor recreation. The weekend is centered on learning, joy, and community while creating space to try something new together.
